What is Milwaukee Armed Forces Week?

Milwaukee Armed Forces Week is a joint effort of the Milwaukee Armed Services Committee, comprised of members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, as well as Milwaukee area citizens and veterans. Its mission is to increase public understanding of the role of the military in a democratic society as well as honor and acknowledge the people of the Armed Forces of the United States.

History

On February 27, 1950, President Harry Truman, by proclamation, set aside the third Saturday in May to honor the dedicated services of our Nation’s military forces. For many years (1950-1976), Milwaukee observed this special day with a parade, usually consisting of Army, Navy Reserves, National Guard forces and Air Force units.

During these years, civilian chairmen for the event were selected from the Greater Milwaukee Committee by Rudolph Schoenecker, managing secretary of the committee and of the Milwaukee Council of the Navy League. Schoenecker called upon Navy and Army reservists to coordinate the parade and other scheduled events such as awards ceremonies, cemetery visits and church services.

In 1977, William French, Senior Vice President of M&I Bank and a veteran of WWII, began the reorganization of the Milwaukee Armed Services Committee, and the present system of selecting and providing a military co-chairman to serve with a civilian co-chair hence evolved. In 2009, Dr. Tom Buck, Executive Director and CEO of the Lutheran High School Association of Greater Milwaukee, is serving as Armed Forces Week’s civilian co-chair while CAPT Bruce C. Jones of the US Coast Guard is serving as his military counterpart.
